Over the summer, please try to use some time to complete the Reading Lessons from Reading Plus. This is one of those little things you can do on your own to improve your reading comprehension and it is so worth it. This program really works and it is at your individual level. If you want a progress report on it please feel free to reach out through email and I can send it you. Yes, I will be available over the summer if you need me. Just send me an email.

In order to keep your Lexile and reading comprehension sharp make sure you are doing 30 mins of Reading Plus three to five days a week. Site Code = rpgriff1 & User name and password are your student number.

Final Session

Warm Up: Antagonist vs Protagonist

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P74SdAxILtY

Work Period:

Featured scenes from Julius Caesar:

One of the biggest questions in this play is the role of Brutus. Is he an antagonist or a protagonist? He remains constant throughout the play with his intentions to protect Rome and its republic. Brutus is honest, but he at times acts without all the information. Brutus is Caesar's best friend and when he betrays that friendship by being last to stab Caesar then the dying man says the famous quote "Et tu brute? Then falls Caesar" as his final words. "Et tu Brute?" translates to "And you Brutus?"

Watch the following scenes and see if you can figure out if Brutus is a protagonist or an antagonist?

1. Act 2, Scene 1:

Brutus spends the entire beginning of the play trying to decide if killing Caesar is even necessary and some of his information is from the not as honest Cassius, whom has a grudge against Caesar, and wants to see him fall at any cost. Cassius plants false information to persuade Brutus to his side. In this scene, Brutus debating with himself to kill Caesar.

3. Act 4, Scene 3:

Brutus and Cassius have fled from Rome with their armies that are beginning to run away and they are fighting out numbered and losing power. They argue and Brutus decides they need to strike with what they have before they lose any more men. That night Brutus is having trouble sleeping when he is visited by a spirit. The ghost of Caesar? Remember that Mark Antony said Caesar's spirit shall not rest until all the killers are dead? Caesar's ghost says see you tomorrow at the place where the big battle is to take place.

4. Act 5, Scene 5:

Death of Brutus explanation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-fHxnVOL08

As Brutus dies he says the rare rhyming couplet "Caesar, now be still, / I killed not thee with half so good a will." Brutus tells Caesar’s ghost to be at peace as the last of his killers has died. His last words indicate that the killing of Caesar has weighed upon Brutus and he is now also able to rest.
