Mum's sulky

Some of Bertha's earliest memories are about riding in her mother's horse and sulky.

"She bought a little seat for us to sit on in the bottom of the sulky," says Bertha.

The family lived about seven miles out of Warwick and it took an hour to get to town.

Bertha's mother rode in a horse and sulky for most of her life, never buying a car even though she lived until 1974.

"Uncle Lawrie (Bertha's brother) made her get rid of it when she was about 90 I suppose," says Bertha.

"He said 'you can't be still harnessing a horse, that horse'll knock you over one day and there'll be nobody here.

"So he made her get rid of the horse and sulky and I think he cut her life short."
