Catching rabbits

While Bertha was working as a governess for the McMillans, she also had to help prepare the dinner, which included catching the meat.

"They couldn't afford to buy meat so we used to have to catch rabbits," says Bertha.

"We used to get up early when the grass was wet and the rabbits'd be damp and they couldn't go very fast.

"We had an old dog that helped us chase them and they'd always go into a hollow log.

"So we'd block up the end of the log and chop a hole where the rabbit was hiding and pull him out."
