Mum's scarf

Bertha was about to have knitting lessons in school and remembers asking her mother to buy some pretty pink wool from the shop in town.

But that wasn't what she got.

"I couldn't wait for her to get home… met the old sulky and said 'did you get the wool'?" recalls Bertha.

"She unpacked it and it was a bright red… oh I nearly died!"

Her mother had bought red because she wanted Bertha to make the scarf for her.

Bertha did make her mum the scarf and she treasured it for life.

"She wore it everywhere she went," says Bertha.

"She still had that scarf when she died."
