La Hacienda Portable Powered Speakers
There are two portable powered speakers with stands available at La Hacienda. These can be used to provide much better sound than the overhead speakers can deliver. The staff will set these speakers up at the front of the stage, if requested. The volume control on each should be set straight up (noon position). These speakers will get the same signal as the overhead speakers through the Main output on the sound board. You may adjust the relative volume between the overhead and portable speakers by adjusting volume controls on the portable speakers. You may turn off the overhead speakers by turning off their amplifier (the lower one). Don't forget to turn it back on before you leave.
La Hacienda Mixer
The Mixer is an Allen&Heath QU-16 with an AB168 audio rack. I've found the most useful manuals to be the getting started guide and the reference guide.
Unlike other setups where a huge cable (snake) is used to connect the mixer to all the inputs and speakers located around the room, this mixer has a single either net cable for all outputs and almost all inputs. The only physical inputs at mixer are the two wireless microphones, the CD player and a PC input. All the other signals are carried over either net cable. At the audio rack the physical inputs from the 5 microphone jacks located on the stage and the 1 at the back of the house are inserted on the either net cable. In addition, the audio rack decodes main and monitor mixes from the mixer and sends their signals to the amplifiers (located below the audio rack) and the jacks for the portable powered speakers.
When the mixer is in the back of the house, plug the cable from the rear of the audio rack into the lower wall jack (behind the Audio Rack) marked "back" and plug the mixer's blue cable into the wall jack at the back of the house.
When the mixer is on the stage, plug the cable from the rear of the audio rack into the upper wall jack (behind the Audio Rack) marked "front" and connect the mixer's blue cable to the jack at the back of the stage.
Shutdown & Startup
It appears that shutting down the board the "old way" corrupts some of the settings and when the board is next energized some of it's features do not work. I have created a "scene" that when loaded will allow both the ceiling mains and monitors to work and allow adjustments by the rec personnel. Here's how to shut down the system and also how to start it up the next day.
------------------------------------------------
Shut Down
1. Turn off Amplifiers (Side area), press red lighted switch to off.
2. On Mixer, press "Home" Button
3. On Mixer screen, Touch and select "shut down"
4. On Mixer screen, Touch and select "yes" to confirm"
5. On Back of Mixer, push "on/off" power button to off
6. On front of console, press "off" button to shut off CD player and wireless Mics
7. On front of console, press red lighted switch to off.
------------------------------------------------------------
Start Up
1. On front of console, press red lighted switch to on.
2. On front of console, press "on" button to power up CD player and wireless Mics
3. On Back of Mixer, push "on/off" power button to on
4. On Mixer, press "Scenes" Button
5. On Mixer screen, Touch and highlight "reset"
6. On Mixer screen, Touch "recall"
7. On Mixer screen, Touch and select "yes" to confirm"
8. Turn on Amplifiers (Side area), press red lighted switch to on.
--------------------------------------------------------------
This will give you a working board with various inputs and Ceiling speakers (LR) and monitors outputs (MIX1).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How to adjust volume
Monitors... (MIX1)
With "lower layer" button on mixer depressed, depress the "mix1" button. You can now move the faders to adjust the mic and line music input to the monitors. If you don't want or need monitors, just depress the "mute" button on each of the input channels or the "mute" button on the top of the master volume fader.
Ceiling Speakers (LR)
With "lower layer" button on mixer depressed, depress the "LR" button. You can now move the faders to adjust the mic and line music input to the ceiling speakers. If you don't want or need ceiling speakers, just depress the "mute" button on each of the input channels or the "mute" button on the top of the master volume fader. You can then be using the monitors as your PA system speakers.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Other hints
1. After all adjustments are made, make sure the LR button is depressed.
2. To make adjustments easier, alternately mute the ceiling and then the monitors so that you are only listening to one of them at a time.
3. The manual contains information on many, many more features if you want to know more about this complex mixer.
Scenes
The default scene is called "reset". It is the first one listed.
Do not save to it!
In most cases you'll want to use the 2nd or 3rd scenes ('joe' and 'joe2') rather than the default (1 or 'reset'). These are currently under development by Showcase of Talent and are better than the default in most cases. Scene 'joe' has no reverberation, scene 'joe2' has reverberation, select FX1 and adjust the sliders to control the reverberation.
