College lefty Carlos Rodon was named the Athletics Top Prospect for 2013
Carlos Rodon has been setting the bar high and then exceeding expectations for a few years now, so what's another major step forward for the big lefty pitcher? Rodon has been named as the 2013 winner of the Philadelphia Athletics organizational Lawrence 'Crash' Davis Award for the club's Top Prospect. He becomes just the 2nd amateur to ever receive the honor, following in the footsteps of Stephen Strasburg back in 2009. He is also the first pitcher since Strasburg to win the award, and just the 3rd hurler ever to win the honor, joining Stras in '09 and Mark Prior all the way back in 2002.
A year ago, Rodon was the first freshman in ACC history to be named the conference Pitcher of the Year, and was also it's Freshman of the Year. He was a consensus 1st Team All-American, Louisville Slugger's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year, and was named the top prospect on the USA Collegiate National Team. He followed up those accolades this year with a 10-3 season as a sophomore at North Carolina State, registering a 2.99 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP, and striking out 184 hitters over 132 1/3 IP in which he allowed just 94 hits. He was again named the top prospect on the USA CNT, and has widely established himself as the top prospect for the 2014 MLB Draft.
The previous Davis Award winners have been: Manny Machado (12), Bryce Harper (11), Mike Stanton (10), Stephen Strasburg (09), Jeff Clement (08), Jay Bruce (07), Billy Butler (06), Russ Martin (05), Casey Kotchman (04), Jose Reyes (03), Mark Prior (02), Sean Burroughs (01), Pat Burrell (00), Jack Cust (99), and Brad Penny (98).
