The most unusual WFBL and Major League Baseball season was delayed over four months due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic which shut down operations right in the middle of spring training during March 2020.
Finally after months of determining and negotiating protocols under which the game could resume, the season for both got underway in late July.
The WFBL conducted its Majors Draft on Wednesday, July 22 and began the league's 23rd season the following day.
In that Majors Draft, the Philadelphia Athletics made nine selections, all aimed at providing depth and versatility to the roster: Jean Segura/SS-3B, Tommy La Stella/2B-3B, Victor Caratini/C-1B, Matt Andriese/SP, Roman Quinn/OF, Albert Almora/OF, Genesis Cabrera/P, Collin McHugh/SP, Trevor Gott/RP.
The A's trailed much of the first "short week" of the season against Brantford. But then a Sunday outburst completely turned the tide as the club finally took charge and pulled away to an impressive 8-3 victory.
In Week #2 the A's squared off in a showdown with traditional eastern power Boston. Leading the Dawgs for most of the week, the A's began to lose players to the COVID outbreaks. Juggling the lineup and pitching constantly, the added depth provided in the Majors Draft helped the club battle to a 6-6 tie.
The Minors Draft was then held on August 5, 2020 with the A's holding the first overall pick thanks to a trade with New York over a year-and-a-half earlier. The A's chose the powerful bat of college first baseman Spencer Torkelson. Then in the second and third rounds the club gathered in a pair of flame-throwing, high upside arms in high school pitchers Jared Jones and Dax Fulton.
Week #3 resulted in the only regular season loss for the A's, dropping a narrow 6-5 decision to the Montreal Expos. The club then close out the opening Divisional Round Robin by rolling over the New York Knights by 11-0 and Horsham Chargers by 9-3.
That victory over Horsham clinched a postseason berth, and the A's found themselves matched up with the defending WFBL champion Saint Louis Cardinals in the playoff Quarter-Finals. There the A's romped past the Cards by 11-0.
In the Semi-Finals the Athletics remained red hot, gaining revenge on the Montreal Expos with a decisive 10-2 win that was never in doubt. This sent the A's to Whitey Week for the second time in three years.
The WFBL Championship saw the A's fall behind the Detroit Drillers, who were in the Finals for a third straight year. The A's battled back and got the matchup tied at 6-6 into Saturday action, but Detroit pulled away to a solid lead and then coasted home to a 9-2 victory. It was the Drillers first WFBL championship, and avenged their loss to the A's in the 2018 Finals.
Outfielder Bryce Harper was named as the Jimmy Foxx Offensive Player of the Year, his second after winning the honors in 2015. Starting pitcher Yu Darvish was named as the Lefty Grove Pitcher of the Year winner, his second as well after winning back in 2013. The Crash Davis Award for the top prospect went to pitcher Spencer Howard, who made his MLB debut this year. Harper and Darvish were each joined by closer Kenley Jansen in being named to the 2020 WFBL All-Star team.
