WFBL Hall of Fame 2nd baseman Jeff Kent was named as the 2009 Marzano Award winner
Former 2nd baseman Jeff Kent has been named by the Philadelphia Athletics FBC organization as the winner of the 2009 John Marzano Award, which is given annuallly to a player being enshrined in the team Hall of Fame. The award is named in honor of former A's manager, coach, and broadcaster John Marzano who died tragically in an accident at his home in April of 2008 at the age of 45. The previous honorees are Founding Honoree Paul Molitor and 2008 Honoree Mike Piazza.
For 3 1/2 years from 1999 into the 2002 season, Jeff Kent manned the 2nd base position for the Philadelphia Athletics FBC. During that stretch, Kent drove in 285 runs, still 5th on the A's all-time list as of this date. For the 2000 season, Kent was named as the WFBL's end-of-season All-Star 2nd baseman, denoting that he was the biggest producer at his position in all of fantasy baseball that year.
In his final year with the A's in '02, Kent was again the starting 2nd baseman, but was unable to hold off fast-rising offensive star Alfonso Soriano, who took over the position at the halfway mark. Kent got some action for the team at 1st base down the stretch, and helped lead the club to its first-ever WFBL Championship. For their oustanding joint contribution, Kent and Soriano shared the Jimmy Foxx Award that year as the A's most outstanding offensive player, the only time that the award has been shared in its history. In 2005, Kent was enshrined into the WFBL Hall of Fame along with his longtime A's doubleplay partner Derek Jeter.
