Tex becomes the 12th member of the A's Hall of Fame
The arrival of the annual MLB All-Star Game break saw the Philadelphia Athletics continuing on top of the Owens/East and overall WFBL standings. The A's returned home off a three-game road trip to defeat the Eugene Emeralds by an 8-3 score at Liberty Bell Park. The victory rose the team's record to 13-2-1 on the season and extended their franchise-record unbeaten streak out to 10 games.
During the week the team honored former first baseman Mark Teixeira as this year's John Marzano Award winner, enshrining 'Tex' into the club's Hall of Fame.
Many of Tex' former teammates were on hand for the ceremony, including fellow Athletics Hall of Famers Roy Oswalt, Scott Rolen and Mike Piazza.
Also attending were ex-teammates Jason Varitek, Shane Victorino, Jeff Francoeur, Grady Sizemore, and Francisco Rodriguez.
Teixeira arrived in Philly via a trade with Joplin prior to the 2006 season. He would go on to a five year stint manning first base for the A's from 2006-10, the longest such tenure at the position by any player in the club's history.
The team's current manager Buck Showalter, in his second stint at the helm, was the skipper during Teixeira's entire run with the team.
"Tex was the epitome of professionalism," said Showalter. "Write his name down in the lineup at first base, punch him into the cleanup spot, and he produced, year in and year out. He was a pleasure to have on the field and in the clubhouse, and this is an honor he richly deserves."
Tex currently ranks fifth in Home Runs, sixth in Hits and RBI, and eighth in Runs scored on the Athletics all-time franchise leader boards.
