The Philadelphia Athletics today announced that second baseman Bryson Stott is the winner of the 2023 Jimmy Foxx Award as their top performing offensive player.
Stott arrived while still a minor league prospect in a trade with Las Vegas at the old Winter Meetings back in 2021. He received his first action in the Majors a year ago, getting 26 plate appearances as a 24-year-old and registering both his first hit and RBI.
This season, Stott took over as the everyday second baseman following the major roster rebuilding activity and demonstrated that he was more than ready. The now 25-year-old has produced 12 homers, 51 RBIs, 63 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases with a .295 average and .342 on-base percentage early in the final week of the season.
One of only two position players who has remained fully healthy and started every game this season, Stott edged out the other of those, first baseman Spencer Torkelson, for the Foxx Award honors. Also under consideration was center fielder Riley Greene, who performed well but also missed a month with an injury.
"This change in direction by our club was always going to require a few guys to step up if we were going to be competitive this season" said GM Matt Veasey. "Bryson answered the bell, week after week. Over the course of the season he was easily our most consistently productive player."
The last second baseman to win the Foxx Award was A's Hall of Famer Chase Utley, who captured the honors three times in four years (2006-07 and 2009). The only other second basemen to win it were another Hall of Famer, Jeff Kent, and Alfonso Soriano, who became the only pair to ever share the award back in 2002.
