Carlos Delgado, record-setting A's slugger from 1999-2002, wins 2010 John Marzano Award
Former 1st baseman Carlos Delgado has been named by the Philadelphia Athletics FBC organization as the winner of the 2010 John Marzano Award, which is given annually to a player being enshrined in the team Hall of Fame. The award is named in honor of former A's manager, coach, and broadcaster John Marzano who died tragically in an accident at his home in April of 2008 at the age of 45. The previous honorees are Founding Honoree Paul Molitor, 2008 Honoree Mike Piazza, and 2009 Honoree Jeff Kent.
The power-hitting Delgado came to the club prior to the 1999 season, and his big bat was one of the main reasons the team was able to secure it's first-ever Owens/East pennant that year. He set club records that summer with 43 homeruns and 132 rbi, records which still stand now 11 seasons later with no one having even approached them. The following year, while the team slumped down the stretch and missed the playoffs with a losing record for the only time in franchise history, Delgado again set records with a .357 batting average and a .481 on-base percentage, club records which also still stand today.
Carlos Delgado remained the team's starter at 1st base right through the 2002 season, when he helped the club power to it's first-ever WFBL Championship. For his outstanding contributions to the early Athletics teams at the end of the last century and on into the early part of this one, Carlos Delgado is very worthy of this honor as the latest enshrinee in the Philadelphia Athletics FBC Hall of Fame as the 2010 winner of the John Marzano Award.
