Harper, Sale, and Kingery honored by the Philadelphia Athletics organization
The Philadelphia Athletics announced their 2017 organization awards honorees today. Right fielder Bryce Harper received the Jimmy Foxx Award as the club's top offensive performer. The Lefty Grove Award as the club's top pitcher went to lefty starter Chris Sale. Second baseman Scott Kingery received the Crash Davis Award as the organization's top performing minor league prospect.
For Harper, this was a second Foxx Award in his six-year career, his second in three years. Despite spending the past two weeks on the disabled list with a serious knee contusion, Harper enters the season's final week leading the A's in home runs (29), RBI (85) runs (92), and his .323 batting average is also tops among offensive regulars.
Sale has been the club's clear ace in his first season with the team. The 28-year old left-hander enters the regular season's final week having already set a new franchise record with 253 strikeouts. He leads the club with 178.1 IP, 17 Wins, and 20 Quality Starts. He has a fine 2.88 ERA, and his 0.93 WHIP is also a club record at this point, though he has possibly two more starts remaining.
Kingery came into the organization in the trade for George Springer back on July 15. His presence has helped the Athletics build back some high-end talent in the Minors following a number of big trades which bolstered the big league club. Kingery is hitting for a .306/.359/.543 slash line in MiLB. The 23-year old has 26 homers, 64 RBI, 100 runs scored, and 28 stolen bases. It is anticipated that he will compete for the starting second base job in Philly next spring.
The Athletics had already announced back in July that former third baseman Scott Rolen was this year's Hall of Fame honoree. The first player ever selected by the organization in the original WFBL franchise-stocking Draft in July 1998, Rolen was the club's starter at the hot corner from 1998-2002, and then again in 2006. He was a key player with the 2002 WFBL champion Athletics squad. Rolen entered 2017 at 7th on the A's all-time HIts list, and 3rd in RBI. He was enshrined in the WFBL Hall of Fame back in 2006.
Previous winners of each of these honors can be found at the "Awards" link from the tool bar at the right here at the official Athletics site.
