Mike Stanton & Cole Hamels take home A's 2011 Awards hardware
The Philadephia Athletics organization has announced the winners of the club's two top Majors club awards for the 2011 season, and both were unanimous selections. Lefty ace Cole Hamels was named as the winner of the Lefty Grove Award as the team's top pitcher and outfielder Mike Stanton was named the winner of the Jimmy Foxx Award as the club's top hitter in voting by the team coaching staff.
It is the first time that either player has won the respective awards. Hamel's honor makes him only the 2nd lefty starter to win the Grove Award, the other being Mike Hampton all the way back in 2000. The 21-year old Stanton becomes by far the youngest player to win one of the two major awards for the team.
Heading into his final start on Saturday, September 3rd, Hamels will lead the club in all the major categories of Innings Pitcher (178), Strikeouts (162), Wins (13), ERA (2.58) and WHIP (0.966), and has a chance to break the club record for WHIP currently held by Roy Halladay with a 0.990 mark. Stanton moves into his final weekend having bashed 31 homers, knocked in 80 runs, and scored 72 while hitting .260 with a .351 on-base percentage in his first full season in the Majors.
