Cleaning the Norcold N300 Burner

Burner assembly cleaning on a Norcold N300

Keeping the area behind the exterior vents clean leads to less required cleaning of everything else. You should really clean it twice a year if used regularly, and after any storage period. The rotten-egg smell attracts spiders and other insects who might build nests. Ever see those mosquito traps that have a propane cylinder, it's because it burns propane to lure in the mosquitoes before vacuuming them into the bag.

  1. Turned off LP gas at the tank.

  2. Remove the lower and upper exterior vents.

  3. Wipe or vacuum away dust, dirt and webs inside the compartment.

  4. Remove the screw holding the sheet metal burner cover and slide the burner cover away from the burner housing.

  5. Use some compressed air to blow out the area behind the burner cover and vacuum any dust residue that might be left.

  6. Remove the flare nut on the right hand side of the tee fitting, towards burner assy, using a 5/8in wrench.

  7. Remove the screw that holds the burner tube into the housing, it's another phillips. Move the copper pilot fuel line, carefully to gain access.

  8. Remove the burner from the housing.

  9. I used a razor blade to clean up the slots in the burner tube.

    1. Optional - Loosen the chrome burner tube by unscrewing it counter-clockwise. You can use a rifle cleaning brush to clean the burner tube. - DO NOT try to remove the orifice from the brass fitting. Inspect the orifice, should be clean and round. Vacuum it out if it's dirty or clean with alcohol and blow dry, don't use anything metal/hard to clean. Replace it if deformed. Reinstall orifice into chrome burner tube.

  10. The flue can be accessed from the top vent cover, remove the rectangular flue cap by twisting and pulling upward.

  11. Under the flue cap, the spiral baffle hangs from a stainless steel wire. Carefully remove the wire, it is hooked into a hole in the back of the flue.

  12. If the fridge is removed you can use a shotgun cleaning brush to clean the flue. With the fridge still installed in the vehicle you can use a weighted string to pull a brush or cloth from the top down through he bottom of the flue. If you use a brush or use too large of a cloth, you might have to remove the pilot burner. I like to do it twice with a brush, or four times with a cloth, you will notice it getting cleaner.

  13. Vacuum up all of the the residue in the burner housing.

  14. Wipe off the flue cap, spiral baffle and support wire to remove all soot and reinstall. Don't forget to reinstall the pilot burner if removed.

  15. Install the burner tube back into the burner housing, keeping the crimp vertical so that it fits properly in the slot.

    1. Install the compression nut, housing cover, and double check that all parts were reinstalled properly. Having missing or leftover parts is unacceptable, please make sure that

    2. Turn the gas back on, check all fittings for leaks and test the fridge functions.
