VIN Decode

What is a VIN?

From Wikipedia:  A vehicle identification number (VIN) is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as defined in ISO 3779 (content and structure) and ISO 4030 (location and attachment).

In the USA, they standardized the 17 character format in 1981.  Online VIN decoders generally try to sell you something, there used to be ones that would give out the RPO codes for the newer vans, but they usually end up behind a paywall.

Most important is probably the model year and engine, 8th character for the engine and 10th for the year.  For the year they started in alphabetical order, 1980=A, 1981=B, 1982=C and so on, but skipping i/o/q/u/z so as not to be confused with other characters, 2001 they changed to numbers, so 2001=1, 2002=2, etc until 2010 when they went back to letters.

For our vans the model YEAR characters are:

1985=F 1986=G 1987=H 1988=J 1989=K 1990=L 1991=M 1992=N 1993=P 1994=R

1995=S 1996=T 1997=V 1998=W 1999=X 2000=Y 2001=1 2002=2 2003=3 2004=4

2005=5
