Woody failed as a computer case and in 2004 I decided to go buts once more. I had seen some computer cases made of plexiglas and wanted to give that a try. It ended up being a real eye catcher. Didn't replace the Plexi case but eventually the system was replaced by a (self-built ZFSGuru) NAS.
List of modifications:
- The front fan intake was provided with cracks to make it look damaged.
- To the left side I made a plexiglas piece with a scull on it. I could provide it with a custom colour LED light.
- I added FANs and case lighting.
- I sleeved the power supply cabling to neon pink. This didn't turn out as expected.
Just for info, I've written down my experiences with plexiglas as a computer case.
- It is a nightmare to keep it clean, you see everything on it, even fingerprints.
- Plexiglas attracts dust, which (loosely) sticks to it.
- These kind of cases are difficult to take to a LAN. Not only due to the visual sensitivity but also due to the fact that the case it much less sturdy than a regular metal (or aluminium) case.
- Due to all the lights insects are attracted to it, they get sucked in and end up dead on the bottom of the case. With a plexiglas case you clearly see them gathering over time.
- Plexiglas does not conduct heat, all heat energy must be transferred by air making it a bit more difficult than with a metal or aluminium case.
- Cable management it near to impossible. Nowadays you can buy modular PSU's, which would have made a big difference.

This was the final overview of the Plexi casemod. The green hue is probably caused by the photo camera, I never changed the lighting colours.
