One of the often discussed audio related topics in the selection of 'Large' or 'Small' for your front speakers and the crossover frequency you must select in case you set speakers at 'small'. In order to bring some light to this topic I made some measurements comparing the different crossover frequency my Pioneer AV-receiver offers.
See Game room.
The front speakers are Monitor Audio Bronze 2 (MAB2).
The subwoofer was switched off in order to have a look at what the front speakers produce. The front left speaker is visualised in the graph below, but the front right speaker shows comparable results.
Red graph: the front speakers set to 'Large' on the receiver. The crossover frequency is not applied to the fronts (only surrounds).
Purple graph: the front speakers set to 'Small' on the receiver, with the crossover set to 50Hz.
Blue graph: the front speakers set to 'Small' on the receiver, with the crossover set to 80Hz.
Green graph: the front speakers set to 'Small' on the receiver, with the crossover set to 100Hz.
Yellow graph: the front speakers set to 'Small' on the receiver, with the crossover set to 150Hz.
For these conclusions I do not reference the frequencies below 25Hz as I do not expect they will be reproduced correct.
Based on these measurements I decided that 'small' with the crossover at 100Hz is the best option for my setup.
