Ed's Cyber Niche

Short Biography

I grew up in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in a little coal-mining town called Grundy, Virginia. I then attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated with a degree in physics. After VMI, I served as a submarine officer in the United States Navy - making five strategic deterrent patrols aboard the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Simon Bolivar, SSBN 641. During this time I spent over a year underwater in the North Atlantic. My next 5 years were spent as an engineer building fast attack nuclear submarines at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. I then spent the next 10 years back in in my hometown of Grundy, working computer and networking jobs for a couple years, then working as a librarian for a few years. Around 2004 I decided to finally pursue a doctoral degree, finished my prerequisites, and entered pharmacy school in 2006. I graduated from the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in May 2009 and then worked as a retail pharmacist in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky at the Rockcastle Professional Pharmacy. There I worked as an out-patient pharmacist and also conducted cardiac and pulmonary rehab counseling at Rockcastle Regional Hospital until the summer of 2016. I then came home to the mountains when I took a job as Assistant Professor at my alma mater the Appalachian College of Pharmacy.

My newest passion is trail running and so far I've completed nine 50K's and a couple 50 milers. I'm also enjoy Adventure Racing and still run the occasional road race (5K's up to marathon distance). My hobbies include photography, videography, hiking, birding, genealogy, history, astronomy, and computers.
