The Buchanan County Historical Society met at the Buchanan County Public Library for the monthly business meeting. Rodney called the meeting to order and the group had a brief prayer. The minutes from August were read. There were three corrections. First, Brandon Newsome was listed as a guest but he is a member. Second, the person that Ralph had planned on doing a presentation about was Lewis Rife. Lewis Rife was the brother to Captain Gordon Rife who fought during the Civil War. Third, Simon Street fought in the Civil War but was not killed in the Civil War. Charlie made a motion to accept the minutes with the corrections and Sheldon seconded the motion. The motion was voted on and carried. Rita gave the membership report and as of August the BCHS had forty-one members. In financial business, Rodney transferred $300.00 from the PayPal account to the checking account and $5,000.00 from the checking account to the savings account.

In old business, three BCHS books sold on EBAY and DVD sales are good. Next, the BCHS electronic newsletter was briefly discussed and Rita encouraged everyone to share ideas and articles for the newsletter. Also, Rita shared that the information for the stone for Simon Street was in the mail and the information for Richard Vance was complete.

In new business, the Buchanan County Christmas Parade was mentioned and several were interested in doing a BCHS float. However, nothing was decided. Rodney mentioned that the Russell County Fair had invited the BCHS to participate in the fair this year. Rodney is going to try to set up on September 7, 2016 and have a booth there for several days.

The presentation for the evening was given by Ken Ratcliffe and Tillie France. The presentation was on medicine and medical care during the Civil War. After the presentation, Leona shared a book on her family that had taken seventeen years to compile.

In final news for the evening, Keith Deel is raising money for a headstone for Malachi Deel. Sheldon made a motion for the BCHS to donate $50.00 to the Malachi Deel memorial Fund. The motion was seconded. It was voted on and carried. Also, the group briefly discussed the marker program to mark areas in the county with great historical significance.

Nathan made a motion to adjourn and Sheldon seconded the motion. The next meeting will be on October 6, 2016.

Sincerely,

Bridget L. Lester
