BCHS Mission

The Buchanan County Historical Society of Virginia was established for the purpose of preserving and promoting Buchanan County’s rich heritage; especially our early history, folklore, culture, music, and crafts. Since its inception, it has acted as a non-profit organization. The BCHS considers itself to be a major asset to the county, SWVA region, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation.

Here are some of the contributions that the Buchanan County Historical Society of Virginia will aid in over the coming years:

      • Help in educating school age children by participating in class room projects at area schools.

      • Aid in financing, ordering, and placing of pioneer settler and military personal gravestone markers.

      • Participate in county fairs, folk-life festivals, coal festivals, and other events of Buchanan County and neighboring counties to help educate the public of our rich heritage.

      • Establish a memorial fund for the Red Jacket Mine Explosion of 1938.

      • Help clean and maintain area cemeteries.

      • Promote historical preservation through transcribing and maintaining old vital records and other historical documents.

      • Maintain an open meeting monthly to assist with genealogy and area history.

      • Aid in the preservation of historical buildings and landmarks.

      • Educate the public through the publication of books, journals, and newsletters.

The Buchanan County Historical Society of Virginia is 501(c) 3 compliant. It will maintain its non-profit status to aid the county and area in preserving our history, culture, and heritage.
