Wrightsville Beach - 2003

Michelle and I enjoyed birding the Wrightsville Beach, NC area this past weekend. I had been tracking the reports of alcids seen at the beach in the last couple of weeks and hoped they would remain in the area. We were not disappointed - finding two Dovekie and five Razorbills over the weekend. The Dovekie were seen on Friday, April 4th from the Johnnie Mercer's Pier at about 6:30 a.m. - flying south. After getting back to Virginia on Sunday night I noted that Karen Bearden of Raleigh, NC had reported a Dovekie from the same spot only a couple of hours after we spotted ours. We spotted two Razorbills at the Masonboro Inlet jetty on Friday and two at the same location on Sunday. A fifth Razorbill was found in the Intracoastal Waterway on Sunday - making a total of at least three individual birds. I also saw where two Razorbills and a Thick-billed Murre were reported Saturday on the NC Bird List at the jetty. We failed to relocate the Murre on Sunday.

Over the weekend we found over 70 species in the area. Some of the highlights for us were a Little Blue Heron, over 100 Black Skimmers on Shell Island, Black-necked Stilts, Black-bellied Plovers, Pine Warblers, a Loggerhead Shrike, Western Sandpipers, White Ibis, DC and Great Cormorants, and Red-throated and Common Loons.
