Dear Parents –

It’s finally done! All the books at Grant are cataloged, and library has begun! We can now look up our books and check them out through the computer.  No more signing names on cards or getting the cards put in the wrong book! Hooray!!

This year, along with the new computer system and fabulous new library, I am going to try a new check-out policy.  There will no longer be a limit on how many books a student may check out at once.  Instead, students may check out as many books that they can be responsible for.

This may seem like a huge venture with 5-8 year olds, but I will have many conversations with them about how to be respectful and responsible library users.  One such way is to only check out the number of books that you think you can or will read in a week.  Today I suggested that students begin with maybe just one book and then gradually check out more in the following weeks if they want to.  I also encourage you to discuss with your child(ren) how many books you think he/she should check out.

Listed below is some other information for you to know.

Schedule

Grant Elementary Library features a fixed schedule.  Students visit the library with their class to check out books at their regularly scheduled time, either Monday or Wednesday morning.

Mondays: Bates, Hutchinson, Romanco, Flattery, Mick, Ryan

Wednesdays: Allen, Chidester, Montgomery, McAninch, Foster, Major, DeBruin

Check out Policies

Number of Items: Students are limited to the number of items for which they can be responsible!

Check-Out Time Limit: Students may keep items for one week.

Overdue Fines: There are no fines; however, students must return overdue items before new items may be checked out.

Lost Books: Students who lose or damage books beyond repair will be charged the replacement cost of the book. Parents may give permission for their children to check out more books while lost books are being sought by contacting Mrs. Seddon. Student who habitually lose books and do not pay for them will be limited to using books only in the library.

Making Good Choices

The library media program strives to teach our students to be independent reading consumers. If you notice your child is bringing home materials at an inappropriate high or low level of difficulty, please discuss this with your child.

Thank you, in advance, for you cooperation in helping your child to be a respectful and responsible library user.  If you have any questions or comments, you can best contact me by email, or you can also leave a message at any of the school library extensions.  I look forward to sharing the wonderful world of literature with your student while supporting the ACSD learning community!

            Thank You, and Happy Reading!
