MISSION
The mission of the Jr. High/High School Library is to support school curriculum and enable all students to:
Appreciate and enjoy literature
Be effective users of information
Be life-long learners
POLICY Q&A
How many books can I have checked out at a time?
As many as you can be responsible for.
How long can I keep a library book?
You can keep a library book for 3 weeks.
What if I finish my book before it is due?
First of all, “Hooray for you!” Then you have a few options. You could:
Return the book to the library in the morning before class starts, during pass times, or after school.
Ask your teacher for permission to come to the library during class. Then you can return the book and check out another one.
What if I do not finish my book before it is due?
We can probably renew the book for you, or check it out to you again. Bring the book to the library to renew it.
If someone else has made a request, or asked, for the same book you have, we ask that you please finish it ASAP—as soon as possible.
You can renew a book 2 times if there are no other requests for it.
But do be a respectful and responsible library user -- try and return a book as soon as possible so other students can enjoy it, too.
What if I forget to return my book by the due date?
You can still read books while you are in the library!
You may check out one additional book, unless:
the other book has been overdue for more than two weeks
you owe $10 or more in library fines
Communication to parents/guardians:
Overdue notices may be automatically emailed periodically.
Mrs. Seddon also communicates with parents through SeeSaw, School Messenger, emails or phone calls home.
Library Fines: At three months overdue, a non-refundable overdue fine will be charged: $5 for a paperback book, $10 for a hardcover book, or full price for a new book (one that has been in circulation one year or less.)
Damaged books that cannot be repaired will be charged the same amounts as overdue books.
Students with fines less than $10 may check out one additional item. However, if the fine is $10 or more, no additional items will be checked out to students.
If a copy of the same title and format (paperback or hardcover) is offered for replacement before the fine is assessed, it will be accepted. Once a fine is put into PowerSchool or paid, there will be no refunds.
Students who habitually lose books and do not pay for them may unfortunately be limited to using books only in the libraries.
What if my library book gets damaged or lost?
Please let the library know immediately so we can determine the best course of action and get you checking out books again.
The fine will be the same as overdue books: $5 for a paperback book or $10 for a hardcover book. If the overdue book is less than a year old, the fine will be the full price of the book.
Take good care of your books and you shouldn’t have to worry about this! Remember, you are responsible for what you borrow.
Students who habitually have overdue books and do not pay for them will be limited to using books only in the library.
LIBRARY PROGRAM
At the Jr. High/High School Library there is a flexible schedule. Students are encouraged to visit the library to use its resources before or after school, during their free time or, if during classtime, with a pass from a teacher. Teachers may schedule class time in the library to use its resources or for instruction with Mrs. Seddon on Thursdays. Unfortunately, however, space may be limited in the library during larger study halls.
Teachers, students, or parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Seddon for help in finding, using, and evaluating information sources for personal or school purposes.
Anyone can search the library collections online at https://albia.follettdestiny.com. (All ACSD library collections have been accessible 24/7 through Follett since 2011-2012!)
Students are encouraged to do the "booky looky" with library books to make sure it is a good fit for them and their families. We encourage each family to have a conversation about what kinds and how many books their grownups are ok with their student reading and/or checking out.
If anyone has questions about or wants to review the library collection or review policies, please begin your search here or contact Mrs. Seddon.
EXPECTATIONS
All users of ACSD libraries (students, school employees, library staff, and visitors) are expected to:
Be productive
Be quiet
Be respectful
Be responsible
Be safe
Library users who do not meet these expectations may be asked to leave and return at another time when they have the opportunity to meet the expectations again.
