Facilities has been working hard to limit Siena's ecological footprint and create a more sustainable campus.
In recent renovations and campus projects, recycled material has been used along with materials and products that are more environmentally friendly such as 100% LED lighting, ground sourced heat pumps, and solar heating, as well energy star appliances.
Peroxide based cleaning supplies are being used along with microfiber cloths to limit water use by around 90%.
Entrance matting in academic buildings and residence halls limit debris, thus cleaning supply being used to maintain halls.
Organic methods of pest control, such as cedar, cinnamon, and rosemary oil are being used in place of harmful chemicals.
Organic brines are being used for campus de-icing rather than road salts and chemicals.
Large scale recycling of dorm desks, chairs, dressers, and mattresses greatly limit waste being sent to landfills.
Renovation and landscaping projects such as the newly constructed Library Path
The facilities department is proud of their efforts in making Siena a green campus. Check out the pages on their Energy Consumption and Conservation Efforts, Emissions Study, and 2016-2017 Campus Waste Report.
Update from Mark Frost (Director of Facilities) Spring 2021:
1) Gioia Hall (McGuire) still has a geo-thermal heat pump system and wells
2) Gioia Hall also has LED lighting throughout and the new addition has energy saving features that exceed code requirements.
3) We just finished up a project to replace 9 roof top HVAC units on the MAC (7) and Padua Hall (2). These new units are substantially more energy efficient than the old units.
4) We are in the process of retrofitting the overhead light fixtures in the Lonnstrom Dining Hall with LED lamps and we plan to start doing the same with some of our exterior fixtures later this fall.
5) We have just finished up a project to upgrade a major section of stormwater lines in the Academic Quad and we also performed some much needed maintenance of one of our wetlands (Wetland C located behind the MAC).
6) Hundreds of cubic yard of asphalt removed during milling operations this summer will be re-used by the asphalt plant to make new asphalt for other client projects.
7) We are continuing our program to plant new trees to replace the trees recently removed due to age, disease or storm damage.
Update from Rich Tortorici III (Director Facilities Operation) Fall 2023:
1) Giola Hall’s Ground-Source (Geothermal) Heat Pump was installed during renovations. The pump will reduce energy consumption and corresponding emissions by up to 44% compared with air-sourced heat pumps, and up to 72% in comparison with electric resistance heating with standard air-conditioning equipment.
2) This summer the solar panels on Rosetti Hall were upgraded with new electrical components, making them more efficient and reliable.
3) LED lighting has been installed indoors and outdoors, allowing the campus to be lit more efficiently while being more environmentally friendly and cost effective.
4) Hines and Foy Hall received NYSERDA-funded work on more than 130 steam traps this summer, reducing energy usage in the buildings.
