Light Switch Signs

Siena has an adorable addition to walls all over campus! This cute little pup is here to remind students to turn off the lights when they leave a room. Facilities has been at work updating lighting and fixtures on campus, installing LED lights, energy efficient devices, and motion sensors switches. However, Siena still spends over 1.2 million dollars on electricity alone, with a portion of that cost from lights being left on all over dorm rooms, academic buildings, and other facilities.

The burning of unnecessary electricity not only costs the school and ultimately students, but costs the environment as well. Approximately 1/3rd of all of the carbon emissions in the United States comes from electricity production, with around 68% of all energy produced in the US ending up being wasted through various inefficiencies. This initiative was set up as part of Spring 2020’s Sustainable Campus class, with a project by Jessica Dupont to conserve energy on campus with a focus on light waste, carried out by the sustainability scholars, and designed in part by Art Director Sergio Sericolo. We hope that these gentle reminders to be conscious of your actions will help decrease unnecessary energy waste on campus.
