All About Recycling

Yes! Siena does recycle!!!!

Our campus has a single stream recycling system.

What does single stream recycling mean?

Single stream recycling means that there are two places to put your trash.

  1. Is into the garbage bin, that is either sent to a landfill or to an incinerator, both emit many toxic substances and have a large carbon footprint.
  2. Is into the recycling bin. All recyclable materials can be placed into a single bin. This recycling bins can take glass, cans, approved plastics, and paper.

Where can I recycle?

Everywhere!

Every building has a recycling plan in place. While the way they collect recycling from the bins differ, what you can put in the bins all across campus is the same!

What can be recycled?

  • Clean cardboard
  • Magazines
  • Mixed office papers
  • Phone books
  • Metal cans
  • Glass
  • Certain plastics (must have triangle and number!)

*all things to be placed in a recycling bin must be clean and free of any food or oil residue

Common things we CAN'T recycle

  • Plastic bags (shopping and Ziploc)
  • Plastic wrappers
  • Food waste
  • Styrofoam
  • Greasy pizza boxes
  • Anything that's a mix of materials (chip bags, waxy paper, etc.)

A single piece of non-recyclable material can contaminate a whole collection of recyclables. Please make sure to dispose of waste in the correct locations, even if it means taking an extra few steps to find a recycling bin or trashcan, and encourage those around you to do the same!
