The facilities department receives yearly reports on the amount of waste produced on our campus that goes to either recycling facilities or the local landfill. This past year, over 1,095 tons of waste were collected as municipal waste.
Hauled waste consisted of:
885 tons of regular solid waste
210 tons of construction and demo material
The campus produced 87 tons of single stream recycling, which makes up less than 10% of our overall campus waste.
The facilities department does all they can to ensure that the school is sending as little waste as possible to landfills, so it is important that all school community members do their part in limiting their overall waste. Make sure to use designated recycling bins, and tell those around you to do their part as well.
Did you know that a single piece of non-recyclable material can contaminate a recycling collection container? This means that a single piece of food waste being placed in a recycling bin sends the entire container of plastics to the landfill. Check out the Recycling Page to see what types of materials can be recycled on campus.
On a larger scale, the facilities has been able to replace much of the residence hall furniture over the past summer. Rather than throwing them away, these goods were sent to places that could reuse them.
12 tons of mattresses
5 tons of chairs
11 tons of dressers
6 tons of beds
Additionally, there was 29 tons of metal recycling and 31 tons of bailed cardboard collected over the past year.
