The Information Commons is a major learning resource for all learners of the University. Besides extensive personal working space, it has a large number of PCs available and contains the more frequently used textbooks. There are ten meeting rooms for your use, which provide a convenient place for group meetings to take place. The Information Commons is open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. For more information, see:
The Information Commons is where much of the School’s collection of books and journals is housed. Some books which are in high demand and are intended mainly for learner use are held in the Information Commons. The University’s online StarPlus catalogue will give you full details of all books in the collection, including their location and current availability.
For journals you will mainly use the online collection which can be accessed from any PC connected to the University’s intranet or from the internet, using MUSE.

The Management School has a code of practice for dealing with learners’ personal details. Naturally we will not give details about you to anyone outside the University without your permission, and that includes your workplace or professional sponsor. When you give our name for reference purposes (in connection with a job application, for example) we take it that this implies permission to give relevant information to the person requesting a reference, provided the enquiry says ‘has given your name as a referee’.
Information that you give us about illness, absence or ‘normal;’ personal circumstances will be placed on a confidential file, which is available to staff only on a need-to-know basis.
At the Examination Board, the Chair will simply state that a personal or medical condition has affected assessment performance, perhaps indicating if the effect is likely to be significant, but will not normally go into detail.
You may have matters of a very personal nature that you do not wish to be generally known, but may have affected your progress or assessment performance. You may tell your module tutor or Programme Director this information in complete confidence. The details are filed away in a ‘strictly confidential’ file which can only be accessed by the Director, the Dean of the School, or the Chair of the examination board, if that is a different person. If the matter does concern examination performance then the board will be told that there have been extenuating circumstances, but will not be told any of the details.
The use of personal information is covered by the GDPR Act (2018). The University’s policy and guidance on this can be found online:
