The University has numerous documents relating to health and safety, most of which are aimed at laboratory-based disciplines. For non-laboratory based subjects such as management, the following is important:
The most important thing is what to do in the event of a fire. The basic steps are:
Raise the alarm by shouting to others or breaking a glass call point.
Call the fire service: The number on the internal telephone system is 4444.
Shut the door to contain the fire.
Leave by the nearest safe exit and go to the assembly point.
If you hear the fire alarm, a bell or two tone electric sounder, then:
Shut down any equipment if it is safe to do so.
Leave the building by the nearest safe exit.
Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
Do not use the lifts.
Go to the assembly point.
Please note that each week there is a fire alarm test, which is usually an intermittent tone lasting a few seconds. The day and time varies across the University.
In the case of a serious accident call the emergency services on a University telephone by dialling 4444.
Personal harassment can involve a range of behaviour which is unacceptable to the recipient and which creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for employment, study or social life. The University of Sheffield is committed to a working and learning environment that is free of any such intimidation and, of course, unlawful discrimination. If you are suffering harassment you are very welcome in the first instance to talk to your personal tutor or programme director.
