PREVENT and Fundamental British Values

PREVENT is a national safeguarding initiative in which Local Authorities, the Home Office, Government Departents and Community Organisations work collaboratively to "prevent" people who are vulnerable to radicalisation from being drawn into extremist causes in which they could be incited to commit acts of terrorism. PREVENT is one of four aspects of a wider anti-terrorism strategy called CONTEST.

The Fundamental British Values are supporting themes that training providers such as The Sheffield College promote in the curriculum to support the PREVENT initiative.

How is PREVENT relevant to me?

Many of our apprentices do not understand why The Sheffield College promotes the Fundamental British Values and why we educate students about the PREVENT strategy, because they do not realise why it is important to them in their workplace and/or sector.

Why is PREVENT relevant to me?

British Values

The Fundamental British Values are promoted to students by schools and colleges with the goal of helping people to feel like they are valued members of society so that they will not be drawn towards extremist causes.

Extremism is defined as "vocal or active opposition to the Fundamental British Values"

What motivates extremism

There may be several motivations behind extremist groups or individuals that motivate them to want to prepare for or carry out acts of terror. Usually it stems from being either religious or political, but there can also be overlap between the two.
