Citizenship: Student voice and participation

Home > Citizenship: Student voice and participation

Democracy and Individual Liberty are two of the Fundamental British Values. The Sheffield College upholds these values with a Students' Union to represent the voice of students and by encouraging our students to participate in democratic decision making processes through Student Voice activities.

By participating in Student Voice, you can have a taster of being an active citizen in wider society when you will practice Democracy on a larger scale such as by voting in general elections, writing to your local MP, and being involved in topical debates or television programmes (such as being an audience member on BBC Question Time).

Outside of the political sphere, practicing Democracy and your Individual liberty will also be part of your day-to-day experience in the workplace where you may have to negotiate (such as negotiating your salary, contract or holiday requirements), make business deals and arrangements (such as drafting contracts) and discuss issues in meetings.

Additionally, you may want to be more than any ordinary citizen by going above and beyond to better British society, such as by volunteering and charity work.

Student Voice activities and schemes include but are not limited to the following: Student Surveys, Student Representatives, Students' Union, Clubs and societies, Campaigns, Fund raising and so much more.
