The Winter Gardens were once again a beautifully atmosphere venue for our annual remembrance service. Students, staff, and guests gathered to pay our respects to those who have given their lives protecting us.
The service began with the planting of the commemorative poppies a poignant rendition of the Nimrod by Edward Elgar. The beautiful melody was followed by the laying of wreaths by representatives from The Royal British Legion, Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy staff and students, Mile Stone students and a representative from Cucina.
Mr Brewer and Mr Shepherd read a moving poem The Soldier by Robert Brooke reflecting the pride and sorrow felt by all for those young men lost to war. This was followed by a moving reading from the Mrs Thomas and Mr Shepherd who emphasised the importance of remembering those who gave their lives for freedom.
The service concluded with the playing of The Last Post and the exhortation which was kindly read by the academy's guests. As the students dispersed, the weight of the occasion lingered, a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for the freedoms we enjoy today.
