Staggered walls modulating spaces
Drashti Thumar

About the course :

The studio discusses the creation of localized architectural spaces within public institutions and urban areas, acknowledging the subjective interpretations and unexpected uses that emerge within them. It proposes observing local programs in peri-urban neighborhoods to understand the unique socio-spatial dynamics present. The focus is on developing architectural responses that accommodate these diverse uses and transitions, considering factors like material systems, societal issues, and environmental processes. The studio aims to explore and expand the concept of "detail" in architecture, encompassing various scales and levels of abstraction, from conceptualization to materialization. Ultimately, it seeks to understand space-making in public contexts, generate programmatic responses, and craft built forms that integrate social, cultural, and environmental considerations.

About the site :

Bimbisar Nagar, located in Goregaon East, Mumbai, initially served as a transit camp in the late 1970s to accommodate individuals displaced by the city's expansion. Over time, it transformed into MHADA Affordable Housing Scheme, comprising seventeen G+4 buildings to accommodate residents from low, middle, and high-income groups .

The site, Ganesh Maidan, functions as a communal open space shared by residents and is situated adjacent to a school. Various amenities such as a library (vachnalay), gym (vyayamshala), community center (shakha), water pump room, stage, and public toilet are available on the ground. Additionally, several small hawking stalls operate around its perimeter. The ground serves as a vital hub for social activities and gatherings within the neighborhood. Its proximity to the residential buildings around enhances its accessibility and utility for residents .

FIELD OBSERVATIONS :

How the visual porosity for a home comes about as a choice . Some choose privacy in a way that by using extended grills on their fenestrations they get to keep more eyes outside , in a way creating a safe environment through the idea of boundaries between private and public spaces .  The choice comes about from either through a security viewpoint or a privacy viewpoint . The ownership of the vehicles are declared in front of  these homes id declared through the direct placement hence underlining its authority and further explains its security .

Spaces around the playground have a definite compound wall , which through its various levels helps different animals inhabits it .The children's playground becomes a correct tactile material hence leading to a correct tactile material .

DESIGN INTENT :

The design concept and approach is characterized by dynamic spatial arrangements and fluid transitions between interior and exterior spaces. The design embraces the concept of spatial layering, evident through the use of overlapping volumes and interlocking planes that create a sense of depth and complexity. The integration of outdoor elements such as trees and a pool blurs the boundaries between built and natural environments, fostering a harmonious relationship with the surroundings. This design likely prioritizes connectivity, flexibility, and experiential qualities, offering occupants a diverse range of spatial experiences and opportunities for interaction with their environment.

Conceptual models – exploring with staggered walls through the use of mild steel wires to allow flexibility in model making .

CASE STUDY :

The Moti Bhau Firodiya Center for Inspiration by Studio Advaita features dynamic spaces and innovative wall formations. The design intent revolves around fostering creativity, interaction, and inspiration within the community. The spaces are carefully crafted to encourage exploration and collaboration, with fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor areas to stimulate engagement with nature. Walls are not merely barriers but integral elements of the design, serving as canvases for artistic expression and platforms for communication. The concept behind the design emphasizes connectivity, both physical and metaphorical, creating an environment conducive to the exchange of ideas and the cultivation of innovation. By integrating unique wall formations and flexible spaces, the center aims to inspire individuals to think creatively and push boundaries, fostering a vibrant hub of learning and inspiration in Ahmednagar.
