Spatial Configurations of Jali
Vijay Chavan

Site Introduction :

Bimbisar Nagar, located in Goregaon East, Mumbai, initially served as a transit camp in the late 1970s to accommodate individuals displaced by the city's expansion. Over time, it transformed into MHADA Affordable Housing Scheme, comprising seventeen G+4 buildings to accommodate residents from low, middle, and high-income groups .

Ganesh Maidan serves as a common open space used by people and is located next to a school. On-site amenities include a library (vachnalay), gym (vyayamshala), community center (shakha), water pump room, stage, and public restroom. In addition, some small hawking places operate throughout the boundary. The ground acts as an important hub for social activities and meetings in the area, and its location close to housing improves accessibility and utility for people living there.

EARILER THE JALI INTERGARTED WINDOWS WERE THE PURPOSE OF ONLY FOR THE VENTILLATION BUT TIME PEOPLEHAVE BEEN FILLING THEM WITH CEMENT AND MAKING PLATFORM ON THE OUTER SIDE FOR THE STORAGE. ASLO THE DUTS ARE CRETE SMALL NICHES THAT ALLOWS FOR THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES AS WEEL AS STORAGE .

Design Intent :

Jali as a way to modulate spaces based on their shape and size. They transform into functional shelves and seating areas. Using jali as a navigational tool creates continuous transitions throughout spaces. Allowing interaction and spatial exploration between the spaces.By optimizing space and creating a sense of continuity and flow.
