Sloping Roofs- An experience

Site Observations

Incremental development, as evident on the existing site, can be observed through the overlap of materiality in a sporadic and temporal manner. This means that the development of the site has occurred gradually over time, with new materials being added or existing ones being modified in a way that creates a patchwork effect. This overlap of materials can be seen as different layers or generations of construction, each representing a different phase of development.

The site observations highlight the dynamic nature of incremental changes, showcasing how existing structures are extended and repurposed creatively. This includes using elements like windows for practical functions such as hanging clothes. The fluid integration of open and closed spaces encourages flexibility and connectivity, with small alleys leading to larger open areas, fostering exploration and engagement.

The location is at Bimbisar Nagar, Goregaon (E), Mumbai, near a neighborhood playground called "Ganesh Maidon."In order to provide room for the displaced and accommodate Mumbai's growing population, Bimbisar Nagar was established as a transit camp in the late 1970s. Originally made up of baithi chawls, the region was then rezoned for MHADA housing for low-, middle-, and high-income groups. The leftover land was then built up into seventeen G+4 structures. Transit users at the current Bimbisar location have waited far too long to develop their own community infrastructure. The surrounding surroundings undergo soft appropriations, expansions, and adjustments in response to the requirement for space for daily interaction, leisure, and communal life.

The temporal sloped roofs as the extensions demonstrates a thoughtful response to the site’s climatic conditions, ensuring efficient drainage of rainwater.

Small alleys opening up to large playgrounds can transform the atmosphere, shifting from the intimacy of narrow pathways to the openness and expansiveness of communal spaces. In the alley, there's  a sensee of intimacy ,where conversations might be hushed and interactions more personal .nut as the alleys widen into the open spaces ,the intimacy expands into a shared expirience with more people and a feeling of community. The transition changes the dynamics ,offering both a sense of connection and a broder perspective.

CONCEPTUALISATION & STRATEGISING -

The original idea was to look at what the site could offer and use data to shape the building. The building aims to involve users in its design, creating a feeling of community and closeness. It open to three sides responding to the market and the residential area has potential of becoming a cultural hotspot  The site has usual sun exposure of almost 12 hours per day with minimal shading from surrounding structures. The vegetation on the site is minimal thus marking the possible prolonged sun exposure to the structure. According to the site conditions the programs were placed - nursery and other fenestrations placed in south direction to maximise the use of sunlight  A diagonal grid allows for the creation of spaces with non-standard shapes and proportions. Using diagonal grids instead of the traditional straight ones adds a feeling of movement and interest to the design. It makes the structure look more dynamic and visually exciting. The design works in a way to create Roof's triangular scheme extends to the gabled profile of roof. There was attempt of creating alleys to create an experience of going from an intimate space to open ground  As the alleys widen into the open spaces the intimacy expands onto a shared experience with more people and a feeling of community.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN-

The clinic and daycare, which need to be easily seen and accessed, were put close to the street on the ground floor. Retail shops, needing visibility, were placed along the street edge. The nursery, needing daylight, was put in the south for maximum sunlight. Instead of one big public toilet, smaller ones were made for each unit. Columns were used to create alleys, mixing open, semi-open, and closed spaces for a dynamic feel.

The amphitheater was situated close to the temple to create a central gathering area for cultural events. This location encourages people to come together for performances and celebrations, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN-

providing a dedicated space for activities that don’t need constant access from the street. This layout allows for a quieter and more focused environment for activities such as working out, practicing yoga, studying, or working remotely. . The covered terrace serves as a versatile space, functioning both as a co-working area and a communal terrace for social gatherings or events, providing flexibility and adaptability to the users’ needs.

ROOF PLAN -The design incorporates triangular roofs with Mangalore tiles to achieve a traditional aesthetic. The 20-degree slope is used to withstand Mumbai's climatic conditions, ensuring efficient drainage of rainwater while also providing structural stability against wind and other elements. This design approach balances both functionality and cultural context, creating a visually appealing and resilient architectural solution.

DESIGN SECTIONS- This section of the design emphasizes the synergy between open, closed, and semi-open spaces to facilitate various activities and promote interaction among residents. Semi-open spaces, serving as co-working areas, blend the benefits of indoor and outdoor environments, fostering collaboration and creativity. By ensuring every space is inhabited and utilized effectively, the design cultivates a dynamic and inclusive living environment tailored to the needs of its inhabitants.
