Site Observation

Compound wall creating affordances for temporal kind of infrastructure and local business.

At the edge of the garden, the compound wall serves as a facilitator for entrepreneurial endeavors, such as tea stalls and chicken shops. These makeshift structures, crafted from materials like tarpaulin sheets and bamboo poles, ingeniously utilize the existing trees as anchors, effectively creating their own enclosed spaces. It's fascinating how the compound wall itself offers an opportunity for such temporary infrastructure to thrive. The bustling road adjacent to it furtherenhances its appeal, attracting both vendors and customers alike. This is a testament to the ingenuity of people, who utilize available resources and space to meet economic needs in a dynamic and ever-changing urban environment.

Argumentative Question

"How can we use existing compound walls in cities to create spaces that support businesses and bring communities together? Can we enhance these walls to serve multiple functions effectively?"

Design Strategies

Through observation, the concept of thickening walls emerged. The idea is to craft an overall narrative and form from walls, manipulating their volumes and thicknesses to fashion social spaces. Each wall would offer specific affordances, such as acting as a corridor or providing seating areas, while maintaining visual porosity to encourage free circulation throughout the structure.

Design Process

The concept of “Walls as infrastructure” revolves around utilizing the thickness and volume of walls to shape social spaces between them, facilitating free circulation. By varying the thickness and volume of walls, it creates experiential spaces such as corridors and sitting areas, while also forging visual connections between different spaces. These thicker walls serve as both structural elements and functional components, shaping the spatial experience and promoting interaction. This creates a sense of openness within the space.

1 - Exploring walls as an overall narrative in creating form.

2 - Thickening and contrasting the walls to create built and

unbuilt spaces.

3 -The thickening of walls and the creation of spaces in-between them, such as sitting areas and corridors, establish visual porosity, hierarchy of courtyards, and association with covered spaces.

4-Designing the space for a specific program nestled between the walls involves creating open areas and interstitial spaces to cultivate a sense of openness.
