Grade 9

Indigenous Peoples Art 9

Students will learn about the arts and cultures of Northwest Coast First Nations, studying the elements and principles of design, using mainly First Nations examples as reference points. Drawing, painting, simple printmaking, and composition will be the focus of the exercises and studio projects in this class. Guest speakers from the local W̱SÁNEĆ communities will be invited to support student understanding of the techniques and traditions associated with these art forms.

This course satisfies the grade 9 arts education requirement.

Visual Arts 9

Students will focus on art fundamentals including the elements and principles of design, an introduction to art history, and development of technical skills in a variety of media. Project work includes two-dimensional (drawing, painting, and printmaking), and three-dimensional (sculpture and ceramics). Each unit includes practical exercises and major projects, where students apply the skills and techniques acquired in exercises to complete finished pieces. There is an emphasis on image development and creative approaches to design problems.

This course satisfies the grade 9 arts education requirement.

Grade 10

Graphic Arts 10: Comics and graphic novels

Graphic Arts 10-12 provides students with the opportunity to explore and learn the Art of comics, graphic novels and animation. The course will have the students create their own projects, while learning the fundamentals techniques in each. Drawing, storyboarding, writing, composition and various forms of animation will be the focus of the course. Each student will complete a major final project.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Indigenous Peoples Art 10

Prior learning as a predictor of success: Indigenous Peoples Art 9 OR Art 9 or 10

Students will continue to explore the art forms associated with Northwest Coast First Nations’ and W̱SÁNEĆ cultures. In addition to strengthening design knowledge and basic skills in drawing and painting, students apply First Nations designs to sculptural objects such as boxes, mirror frames and bowls.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Visual Arts 10 (Ministry Art Studio 10)

Visual Arts 10 General is an extension or Art 9, continuing to teach art fundamentals and principles of design, Art History, and the development of technical skills in a variety of media. Project work includes two-dimensional (drawing, painting, and printmaking), and three-dimensional (sculpture and ceramics). Each unit of work includes practical exercises and major projects where students apply the skills and techniques acquired in exercises to complete finished pieces. There is an emphasis on image development and creative approaches to design problems.

Grade 11

Art Studio 11

Art Studio 11 will focus on image development and visual art techniques. Students will expand their previous knowledge of elements and principles of design, and further development of their technical skills in a variety of mediums. Project work includes two-dimensional (drawing, painting, and printmaking), and three-dimensional (sculpture and ceramics). There is an emphasis on original and creative ideas, technical understanding and final presentation.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Photography/Film Studies 11

Photography/Film Studies 11 students will explore image development using various photographic techniques. Students will be introduced to digital and darkroom techniques and image printing. Students will examine photography and film through project and series based work. Photography /Film Studies 11 students will learn the origin and evolution of photography and film throughout history and study contemporary photographers and filmmakers currently creating work. Note: Students must provide own digital and/or film camera.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Studio Arts 2D 11

Studio Arts 2D 11 Drawing and Printmaking will further explore image development and visual Art techniques, with an emphasis on drawing and printmaking. Students will create several drawing projects and designs for posters and t-shirt graphics using silkscreen and other printmaking techniques.

This course satisfies the Grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Studio Arts 3D 11

Studio Arts 3D 11 will focus on image development and visual art techniques, with an emphasis on multiple drawing mediums (pencil, pen and ink, pastel, charcoal, conté, and watercolour pencil), and painting (watercolour, acrylic, and mixed media). Students will also explore printmaking (silkscreen, block printing and mono print) as well a further study of ceramic sculpture.

This course satisfies the Grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Grade 12

Art Studio 12

Art Studio 12 will focus on image development and visual art techniques. Students will expand their previous knowledge of elements and principles of design, and further development of their technical skills in a variety of mediums. Project work includes two-dimensional (drawing, painting, and printmaking), and three-dimensional (sculpture and ceramics). There is an emphasis on self directed, original creative ideas, technical understanding and final presentation.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Graphic Arts 10-12 provides students with the opportunity to explore and learn the Art of comics, graphic novels and animation. In addition to strengthening design knowledge and basic skills in drawing and painting, students apply First Nations designs to sculptural objects such as boxes, mirror frames and bowls.

This course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Photography/Film Studies 12

Prior learning as a predictor of success: Photography/Film Studies 11

An expansion of Photography/Film Studies 11, students will continue to explore image development using various photographic techniques, but from a more personal perspective. Students will further examine photography and film through research projects and series based work. Photography/Film Studies 12 will require students to work more self directed on collaborative inquiry projects. Students will continue to be introduced and study contemporary photographers and filmmakers currently creating work. Note: Students must provide own digital and/or film camera. Cannot be taken simultaneously with Photography/Film Studies 11.

Studio Arts 2D 12

Prior learning as a predictor of success or co-requisite: Studio Art 11 or 12.

Studio Arts 2D 12 is an expansion of the Studio Arts 2D 11 course and will focus on image development and visual art techniques, with an emphasis on printmaking. Students will create designs for posters and t-shirt graphics using silkscreen and other printmaking techniques. Students will also produce projects for groups at Stelly's and the local community.

This course satisfies the Grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

This course is offered outside the regular timetable and is a year long course.

Studio Arts 3D 12

Studio Arts 3D 12 students have an option to take a more self-directed approach to image development. Students will expand on and apply previously acquired techniques to develop a series of projects with choice of mediums (drawing, printmaking, ceramics, painting, photography, textiles or sculpture).
