Grade 9

Art Metal Jewellery 9

Students learn how to create jewellery and art metalwork that will emphasize their personal designs and creativity. Students make beautiful jewellery such as pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings from a variety of precious materials, learning a number of hand tool processes in order to create modern jewellery and traditional pieces as well as sculptural objects. Students learn how to enamel copper, hammer, shape and polish, carve rings from wax and then cast them into silver. Students will also have to opportunity to create stained glass ornaments, boxes and etched signs.

If taken in grade 9, this course satisfies the grade 9 applied design, skills and technology requirement or the grade 9 arts education requirement.

Drafting 9

Prior learning as an indicator of success: Open to all students with or without experience. Drafting incorporates a small amount of both art and math skills.

Would you like to learn how to communicate your ideas using a computer to help you draw? Do you want to work with your hands as well as your mind to solve problems? Do you want to learn how to draw in three dimensions? You will create a portfolio of your work to show others what you can do. Why not enrol in this course and learn a practical computer skill? We use Autocad as our drafting program. This universal program is used for Mechanical-Engineering, and Architectural drafting. This course is a must if you are thinking of entering any trade, design, Engineering or Architectural profession.This course would satisfy the requirement for an applied skill.)

  • Year One: Basic drafting skills and Autocad 2D commands.

  • Year Two: Advanced drafting skills and Autocad 3D commands. There is a lot of self-directed study in year two, where the student picks an area of interest and does an in-depth study within this area.

If taken in grades 10-12, this course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Folk Art 9

This is a hands on course that focuses on the relationship between Art and wood as a primary medium. Students will learn the safe use and function of many traditional hand and power tools. Topics such as cultural locatedness , form and function, Elements and Principles of design, history in art will be examined and put into practice. Emphasis on creativity and personal expression will play key roles in this expanded art studio/wood-shop environment. Students will learn through doing. This class is open to students with or without wood-tech/art experience. The building of creative community and safety are key components. If taken in grades 10 or 11, students will receive two Art credits and two Applied Skills credits.

If taken in grade 9, this course satisfies the grade 9 arts education requirement.

If taken in grade 10, this course satisfies the grade 10-12 arts education/applied design, skills and technology graduation requirement.

Mechanics 9

Students will be introduced to the world of internal combustion engines. Students will build a 4-cycle gas engine from its components as well as a small 2-cycle engine that they can race against their classmates and keep as a souvenir. This course is intended to give students maximum exposure to tools and processes relating to engines. A portion of time is devoted to students working on their own engines that may be modified and improved for use on go-karts in Kart Building 10.

This course satisfies the Grade 9 applied design, skills and technology requirement.

Metal Work 9

Students will be welcomed into the wonderful world of metalwork, where they create wild works of art, bring to life strange creatures, cast objects from molten aluminium, forge tools and begin their journey into welding. In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of bench work, forge and foundry, metal turning, welding, jewelry and art metalwork. This course is creative, hands on, practical and great fun!

This course satisfies the Grade 9 applied design, skills and technology requirement.

Woodwork 9

An introductory course in woodworking. Students learn skill techniques, and safety, with both hand and machine tools. Our goal is to build a knowledge base so we can design and fabricate projects, from the conceptual to the completion of our ideas. If you like working with your hands, this is the course for you.

This course satisfies the Grade 9 applied design, skills and technology requirement.

Grade 10

Automotive Machining 10

Students focus on the machine shop operations associated with the automotive industry. High performance modifications are applied to engine building. In addition students will be introduced to other automotive systems such as brakes, starting and charging, and cooling systems to lead them into Automotive 11. As this course is completely practical in nature, success is based on quality and completion of operations.

An introductory course on the study of green energy. Students will learn about the six most common types of (Green Energy,GE) Solar Power,Wind Power, Hydroelectric power, Geothermal Energy, Biomass, and Bio-fuels. This course offers students a solid base into GE education. The knowledge learned will be applied to real world job studies. Focus on urban harvesting. Elements will include researching the history of inventions, Practical hands on experimentation and small shop projects. Field trips and research into environmental innovations. Students will work on gaining knowledge for the demand into renewable, non-polluting energy sources.

Kart Building 10

Prior learning as a predictor of success: Tech Ed 9: Metalwork is an asset and Tech Ed 9 or 10: Mechanics is essential.

This course follows the learning outcomes of Tech Ed: Metal 9 and is focused on building a lightweight go-kart. Related skills include: fabricating, welding, and machine work. The kart is designed to be powered by a Briggs & Stratton, or other brand horizontal shaft lawnmower engine. Engine building and modification skills come from Tech Ed 9 or 10: Mechanics. This course is extremely high paced but will prove to be rewarding when students complete a fully operation motorized go-kart.

Metal Work 10

Students will expand their knowledge and experience in the metal shop by including drafting and design into their projects. This course will introduce all aspects of welding including Oxy-Acetylene, Mig and Arc and will provide opportunities to build both cool sculptures or functional projects. Machine tool practices will include using a metal lathe to make accurate parts, removing metal using a milling machine and drilling precision holes on a drill press. Projects will be cast from molten metal and finished using hand tool processes. Jewellery including silver rings or stained glass work are other possible avenues to explore. This is a great course to take if you are planning to continue with metal work in your senior years.

Woodwork 10

Would you like to get out of a desk and would you like to work with your hands? Would you like to use power tools such as lathes, table saws, planers and others? Woodwork 10 continues to develop technical skills. Joinery techniques are learned to build projects such as jewellery boxes and hall tables. Personal choice projects are encouraged once the basic joints have been learned. Why not enrol in this course, learn how to solve problems in a practical way and start on a journey through woodworking?

Grade 11

Automotive Technology 11

Prior learning as an indicator of success: No prior automotive experience is required. Car ownership is not required.

An introductory course in automotive mechanics designed for students to build on prior knowledge gained through Automotive 9 and 10. Major topics include: the charging systems, braking system, lubrication, cooling, engine work, emissions maintenance, purchasing and insurance. All work is practical with success focused on work completed with competence. Students who with N driver licenses within the school year will also have the opportunity to work on the school autocross car and participate in events at Western Speedway.

Metal Fabrication and Machining 11

This course will look at many aspects of metalwork, beginning with the design and drafting of project ideas. Students will learn more advanced welding techniques and setups in order to complete their main project. Major machine tool work will involve the use of drill presses, lathes and milling machines including the possible use of a high tech CNC (computer driven) lathe and mill. Students will have the opportunity to design, carve from wax and cast a precious ring or pendant. Skills learned could lead to an exciting and satisfying career in the future!

Woodwork 11

You will be introduced to woodworking tools, both hand and machine, and basic woodworking techniques. You will be able to build a project of your choice such as a jewellery box or small hope chest, a pen or a goblet. You might wish to make a candleholder, an earring stand or a CD holder. Grade 12

Art Metal Jewellery 12

This is a hands-on course that will concentrate on more advanced work in several exciting areas of jewellery and art metal. Lost wax carving will be used to create rings, bracelets, and finely detailed pendants. Engraving and carving of metals will also be covered. Students will have the chance to design, construct and silver solder 3D pendants. Be creative and make pieces of great beauty and value!

Automotive Technology 12

Prior learning as an indicator of success: No prior automotive experience is required. Car ownership is not required, but is an asset.

This course is designed to give students a more detailed and in depth knowledge in automotive mechanics with emphasis on theory and practice. The shop work will be directed at major engine rebuilding and diagnosis, drive train repair, and engine management. Students with driver's licenses will be given the opportunity to work the school autocross car and participate in autocross and drag racing event at Western Speedway.

Automotive Technology 12: Engine and Drivetrain

Prior learning as an indicator of success: No prior automotive experience is required.

This course allows a student to get credit for another 100 hours of automotive work. Major emphasis will be put on a student chosen project that occupies the majority of the semester. Project examples may include but are not limited to: engine rebuilding, engine or transmission swaps and conversions, suspension and drivetrain modifications.

Industrial Coding and Design 12

If you are considering a career as a machinist, designer, engineer, woodworker or getting into a trade involving computer-controlled machines, this course is for you! Do you enjoy working with your mind as well as your hands? In Industrial Coding and Design 12 you will have the opportunity to work from an initial sketch/3D model to a finished product. Students will learn basic movements in coding language and be able to convert 3D model files to the code needed for machine processing. We will be using CAD/CAM/CNC software (MasterCam) during the design and coding stage, 3D printers for prototyping and computer-controlled machinery for final projects created using a variety of different materials.

Metal Fabrication and Machining 12

This is an advanced course for Metal Technology students. Drawing on skills from previous metal working courses, students will be involved in major project work of their choice and design. Student will learn advanced skills in metal fabrication, TIG welding and precision machining. Custom moulds can be carved and shaped in order to have students casting their own, one of a kind, aluminum projects. This course is well suited to a student planning a career in the metalworking trades.

Metal Fabrication and Machining 12: Advanced Fabrication

This course allows students to get credit for another 100 hours of metalwork. Students who have successfully completed both Metal Fabrication and Machining 11 and 12 are encouraged to sign-up for this class and continue improving their metalwork knowledge and abilities.

Woodwork 12 (Levels 1, 2 & 3)

Students will be able to design their own project, or work from an existing plan. If you have taken one or more woodworking courses in the past you will be able to work on more complex projects.

Learning some basic carpentry or furniture building skills, perhaps for job entry or just to allow you to fix things around the house? You will be involved in building projects from a toolbox to a desk. There are three grade 12 course levels available for those who see themselves in the building or cabinet making professions.
