Howe Sound ROAMS (Rivers, Oceans and Mountain School) is an outdoor career education program that introduces a multitude of outdoor experiences (hiking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, and ski/snowboarding) combined with industry-recognized certifications: 80-hour First-aid, Radio Operator, Bronze Cross, Food Safe, and more. The end result, through mentorship and work experience with certified guides, is students who have an appreciation for guide operations and the safety and responsibility that must occur in the field. This course is a full-time program for the second semester. Students will receive credit for Physical Geography 12, CLE, Outdoor Education 11, and Outdoor Education 12. This course is only open to students in grades 11 and 12.
A course fee of $1500 covers professional instructors, certifications, camping fees, equipment repair and maintenance, and specialty gear rental. To keep the cost of this program low, students and families are required to participate in a significant amount of fundraising.
Applications for this program open in February of each year following an in-person information session. Interested students must complete the application by the deadline to be considered for the program.
