Course Scheduling Structure
At Howe Sound Secondary, courses are delivered through several delivery models.
Semestered Courses
Students take four courses per semester within the regular timetable, attending each course daily for 80 minutes. The schedule follows a four-week rotation, where the order of blocks shifts each week. After four weeks, the rotation restarts. The majority of courses will be delivered through this model.
Hybrid Courses
Hybrid courses run on the semester course schedule and are a blend of in-person and online. This option is only available to students who can manage independent learning, stay disciplined, and complete coursework and assignments remotely on non-class days.
Hybrid Courses Offered:
Entrepreneurship 12
Physics 12
Full-year Courses
While the majority of Howe Sound Secondary’s courses are built around a semester system, a few select courses are offered in a full-year format during the school day. A full-year course is always paired with another full-year course and will run every other day throughout the school year from September to June. Each course is designated as a Day 1 or Day 2 course and follows an alternating week structure within the regular school day:
Week 1: Course 1 runs on Mon., Wed., and Friday. Course 2 runs on Tues. and Thurs.
Week 2: Course 1 runs on Tues. and Thurs. and Course 2 runs on Mon., Wed., and Friday.
Full-year Courses Offered:
Foundations & Pre-Calculus Math 10 (FPC 10) paired with Physical and Health Education 10 Group-focus (PHE 10-GRP)
English First Peoples 10/11/12 and Indigenous Leadership (dual credit) paired with Career Life Education 11/Connections 12 (CLE 11/CLC 12)
This format allows for extended learning time and a more balanced workload.
Please note the following:
1) If students are unable to take PHE 10 or they are taking the course online, they must enroll in a semester-based math course.
2) If students are approved for a support block, that support block cannot be substituted for a full-year class. Support blocks are only offered as semester-long classes.
3) Like all courses, enrolment is dependent on course availability and space. A student who requests a full-year course is not guaranteed to get it.
Outside of the Timetable Courses
Some select courses are offered outside the regular school timetable hours, meeting once or twice a week at 7:30-8:30 am or 3:30-5:00 pm. Students must ensure they can commit to attending and have transportation arrangements, as school bus services are not available during these times. The course descriptions for these courses will include that they are outside the timetable.
