There are two options for Math 10
This pathway is intended for students who are planning to pursue post-secondary studies at university. It is a challenging course with a more theoretical approach to mathematics than the Workplace Math 10 course.
Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 can be taken daily for a full semester or as a full-year course in conjunction with Physical and Health Education 10. Please see the course scheduling structure page under the Home tab for more information..
This pathway helps students develop math skills needed for trades and workforce entry. Topics include financial literacy, data analysis, geometry, trigonometry, measurement, proportional reasoning, and probability, with projects to show practical applications. Students who found Math 9 challenging can take Workplace Math 10 to build confidence before advancing to Foundations of Math 11.
To graduate, students must take a Math 10 course (4 credits) and a Math 11 or 12 (4 credits). All students are also required to complete a provincial numeracy assessment. They will have the option to write this assessment up to three times before graduation.
Math Pathways
Choosing the right math course depends on your child’s math ability, interest, and future plans. Attendance, work ethic, and other commitments should also be considered.
If a student found Math 8 and 9 challenging but worked hard or plans to pursue a trade or technical career, Workplace Math may be the best fit.
If a student excelled in Math 8 and 9, enjoys math challenges, and is considering a career in social or applied sciences, the Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus pathway is ideal. To find out more information about each pathway option, please talk to your child’s math teacher or counsellor. You can also visit www.wncp.ca for more curriculum information.
Foundations of Math 12 is a requirement for many college or university programs. Depending on a student’s ability in Grade 9, there are different pathways to choose from:
Joey has struggled with math in Grade 9. He tries in class but gets overwhelmed with all the information required in math. He planned on going to Capilano College and needed Foundations of Math 12 to apply. To build his skills and confidence, he is taking Workplace Math 10 before moving into Foundations of Math 11 and 12.
Samantha has done reasonably well in Grade 9 but had to work really hard in Foundations Pre-Calculus Math 10. She was not ready for Pre-Calculus 11 so she signed up for Foundations of Math 11 and 12. This helped her build her skills and used this to apply for Nursing at the University of Victoria.
