All groups in the music program will perform a variety of styles to promote music appreciation. All students can perform in concerts, school exchanges, field trips and tours. There may be up to three major concerts per semester.
Concert Choir is open to all students and performs locally and out of town. Success in this course requires enthusiasm and commitment to rehearsals and performances. Students will learn diction, posture, breathing, rhythm, blend, sight-reading, ear training, and basic theory while preparing songs. Performances count toward the grade, and students enjoy the same opportunities as other music ensembles, including tours (offered outside the timetable).
Students learn the basics of music composition across styles like classical, jazz, rock, pop, hip hop, and electronic. They study basic theory, history, and orchestration to create their own music using digital media platforms. This creative course encourages exploration and effort, and while no prior musical knowledge is required, it is helpful.
Senior Concert Band is open to Grade 11 and 12 students with intermediate band experience. Students will perform at several concerts, which count toward their grade. The program challenges advanced musicians to improve their skills, learn advanced music, and play various styles like marches, ballads, Broadway, and pop.
CONCERT BAND 11 AND 12 - TRANSITIONS (MIMCB11---TR/MIMCB12---TR)
This course is for beginner musicians interested in playing a band instrument. Students will play a variety of music, from concert band and jazz to pop and movie themes, while learning technique, tone, music reading, ear training, teamwork, and performance etiquette. They will perform at school and district concerts and travel with other music ensembles.
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC 11 & 12: (MMUCM11/MMUCM12)
Contemporary Music is for Grades 11 and 12 students already in another ensemble who want a deeper musical experience focusing on jazz or classical genres. Students focus on techniques and skills in their chosen genre through solo and ensemble work. They explore musical theory, techniques, technologies, creative processes, and various styles and traditions, including First Peoples’ perspectives.
Jazz Ensemble is for Grades 10-12 students with band experience. They’ll perform at concerts, playing swing, pop, rock, funk, blues, and Dixieland while learning improvisation and jazz techniques. This year-long course meets outside the timetable on Tuesdays (7:30–8:30 am) and Thursdays (3:30–4:30 pm).
