Athletic Leadership 10 is a course for students who wish to learn about and develop leadership skills through sports management and other sports related activities at the school. Students who join this course should want to leave a positive impact on our school community and support sports flourish at Howe Sound. This year-long course meets weekly after school. Students are also expected to dedicate additional outside hours to assist with events and activities, gaining valuable real-world experience in sports management.
Concert Choir is open to all students and may meet outside of regular hours from September to June. The HSS Singers perform locally and out of town. Success in this course requires enthusiasm and commitment to rehearsals and performances. Students will learn a variety of singing techniques and basic theory while rehearsing songs. Concert performances are part of the grade, and the course offers the same incentives as other music ensembles, including tours.
This course helps students build personal responsibility and leadership skills through the arts. Students will plan and run school performances and events while supporting the local arts community. This course runs on Wednesdays at lunch and on various additional days to support events.
This year-long hybrid course, open to students in all grades and skill levels, includes mountain bike trail riding, fitness training, and industry-led seminars. Weekly group rides occur in Fall and Spring, weather permitting. During November to February, students focus on fitness plans, dryland training, goal setting, and participate in seminars featuring pro riders and trail builders. Sessions are on Mondays, 3:30–5:30 PM, with cross-training offered in a hybrid format, which is a mix of face-to-face and self-directed learning.
This course is for students interested in teaching Yoga or enhancing their practice. The 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training will prepare students to teach a basic Yoga class and become certified Yoga teachers. It follows Yoga Alliance guidelines for high educational standards. Students will learn how to teach Yoga safely to all levels. This certification opens career opportunities in health and wellness and provides a foundation for further studies in health sciences. A $200 fee covers field trips, certifications, and guest speakers. Prerequisite: prior Yoga experience. The course runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm for the full year.
Students in this course will contribute to the school community, focusing on the school farm and food accessibility. Students will develop leadership skills and learn about the local food system. The course teaches students to plan and run programs that benefit the school. This is a year-long class that will meet once weekly after school, as well as when needed when relevant events or learning opportunities arise.
Jazz Ensemble is open to students with prior band experience. Students will perform a variety of genres at several concerts. They will also learn improvisation and improve their musicianship. This year-long course meets Tuesdays from 7:30-8:30 am and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 pm.
Yearbook 10 is an introduction to making decisions around the theme, layout and production of the HSS yearbook. Students will develop skills in photography, marketing, layout and design, writing and editing, and distribution. Students are assigned pages to design and complete on deadline. This class meets once a week, after school for the full school year.
Leadership 10 gives students the chance to build leadership skills and get involved in school life. Students plan events like assemblies and theme days, raise awareness for social issues, and support charities. Volunteerism is a key focus, with opportunities throughout the year. The class meets once a week after school for the full year.
This year-long course starts in September and leads to a production in March. Students will participate in the Zone Festival and Workshops, with the goal of attending the Festival of the Arts. Students can choose from roles like acting, set design, backstage crew, tech crew, or wardrobe. The class meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, with additional classes starting in January to prepare for the performance.
