ATHLETIC LEADERSHIP 11 AND 12 (YCPA-1B-AL/YCPA-2B-AL)
Athletic Leadership is a course for students who wish to develop their leadership skills through sports management as well as other means. These students will have a positive impact on their peers and their school by leading athletic events at Howe Sound Secondary and in the community. This is a 4-credit Board Approved Course. Credits will count towards elective credits. This is a year-long class that will meet at scheduled times after school (offered outside the timetable).
FINE ARTS LEADERSHIP 11 AND 12 (YCPA-1AFIN/YCPA-2AFIN)
This course helps students build personal responsibility and leadership skills through the arts. Students will plan and run school performances and events while supporting the local arts community. Events may include showcases, workshops, dance competitions, guest classes, lunch performances, community volunteering, galas, theatre productions, festivals, and art shows. This course runs on Wednesdays at lunch and on specific days required to support events.
FOOD & COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP 11 AND 12 (YAAPS1A---FAR / YAAPS2A---FAR)
Food & Community Leadership provides students with opportunities to contribute to the school community, particularly relating to the school farm and food accessibility Students will develop the organizational tools and other skills necessary to develop leadership mentality while being exposed to different elements of the local food system and its agents. The course will teach students to plan and implement programs that will benefit others in the school. This is a year-long class that will meet once weekly after school, as well as when needed when relevant events or learning opportunities arise.
INDIGENOUS LEADERSHIP 11 AND 12 (YCPA-1C-ABL/YCPA-2C-ABL)
Indigenous Leadership 11/12 provides students with leadership experience in and out of school and the opportunity to connect with students throughout the district. This course emphasizes understanding of First Nations culture, history and language and the development of well-rounded individuals with a sense of belonging and identity. The focus is on enhancing cultural understanding and community connections. This year-long course is open to all students and runs at lunch on Thursdays, plus five full-day district meetings. This course runs in conjunction with EFP 11 and 12 in a blended full-year delivery model.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP 11 AND 12 (YCPA-1A-LEA/YCPA-2A-LEA)
Leadership 11 and 12 provide students with the opportunity to learn and develop leadership skills and be involved with the school in a unique way. Leadership students are part of the team that plans, organizes and runs events and activities that make HSS more than just a school. These include school-wide assemblies and theme days such as PJ day, pink shirt day and more. Leadership students also help raise awareness about social issues and raise money for charities. Volunteerism is a big part of being a leader, and there are many great opportunities for HSS students throughout the year. This class meets once a week, after school for the full school year (offered outside the timetable).
