Howe Sound ROAMS (Rivers, Oceans and Mountain School) is an outdoor career education and leadership program that introduces a multitude of outdoor experiences (hiking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, and ski/snowboarding) combined with industry-recognized certifications: Ski or Snowboard instructors course, 80-hour first-aid, Radio Operator, Bronze Cross, Food Safe, and more. Through mentorship and work experience with certified guides, the end result develops students who have an appreciation for guide operations and the safety and responsibility that must occur in the field. Students will spend time learning how to build trails, navigate in the mountains and the ocean, and gain experience from professionals in the adventure tourism industry.
This course is a full-time program for the second semester. Students will receive credit for Physical Geography 12, CLE, Outdoor Education 11, and Outdoor Education 12. This course is only open to students in grades 11 and 12.
A course fee of $1500 covers professional instructors, certifications, camping fees, equipment repair and maintenance, and specialty gear rental.
To keep the cost of this program low, students and families require a significant amount of fundraising.
Applications for this program open in February of each year following an in-person information session.
Interested students must complete the application by the deadline to be considered for the program.
Some people are happy just hiking, exploring outside and experiencing new things. Learning without sitting in a classroom looking at a Chromebook. There is so much more to the world and you get one chance to make the most of it. This program gives you that chance to be outside with your best friends learning from a new perspective.
