visual ARTs

Overview

Art encourages self-expression and creativity. Teaching students about art helps them develop creative problem-solving skills. In addition, difficult concepts are more easily understood when they are presented visually and are connected to images from their own culture.

Middle school arts courses expand students' understanding of the four strands of art education: art appreciation, art history, art production, and art criticism. At James P. Sinnott we encourage students' creativity in all classes and our art program teaches basic and advanced methods of creating art.

Graphic Arts

Graphic Art is usually 2-dimensional and created to serve a purpose. At James P. Sinnott our graphic artists are introduced to the Elements of Art and create their individual projects on computers. They learn the skills of manipulating digital images while creating stunning artwork in the process. Our students commonly create artwork that visitors think is done by high school students!

Studio Art

Studio Art focuses on building foundational skills used for self-expression. Artists use a variety of media to develop a range of artistic practices and craftsmanship techniques. Students are exposed to the world's rich cultural heritage, and how significant history is to the meaning, purpose, and expression of art. Refining these skills enable artists to create more complex design strategies that better communicate messages and develop new aesthetic judgments that support the making and understanding of rich meaning in art.

8th Grade Portfolio

At James P. Sinnott we are committed to giving our students the best chance of entering specialized art high schools. Our students have been accepted to prestigious schools like the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Portfolio development is a important aspect of gaining entrance to these schools. Our principal, Ms. Hermann, takes a direct approach and guides students in their journey in creating their portfolio for submissions.
