Magnet Health and Health Careers

The Magnet Health and Health Careers is a program offered to our students interested in the medical profession and a comprehensive Health related curriculum and instructional based. Health education teaches physical, mental, emotional and social health. It motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors. Health education curricula and instruction help students learn skills they will use to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime.

A comprehensive health education program is an important part of the curriculum at our school. The goal of this program is not only to increase your child's health knowledge and create positive attitudes toward their own well-being but also to promote healthy behaviors.

At our school we use the Health Smart program and it is used to promote the healthy growth and development of youth and give them the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices and establish life-long healthy behaviors.

We also partnered with IO CLASSROOM which is a school management system to empower teachers and instantly provide snapshots to parents and students to better drive instruction and learning. Our students interested in the Medical Profession will use the VITAL SIGNS program, which is an interactive program that allows students to experience real life scenarios in the medical field.

HEALTH

Previously in health education, students have received instruction in civility, citizenship, and character education by expanding the concepts of tolerance, respect for others, and dignity to include: an awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people.

As students participate in Health Education, they develop skills, practice problem solving, assess risks, learn facts, and build their understanding of complex health concepts and issues. Future topics serve to educate students in preventing youth health-risk behaviors identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including 6 MAJOR TOPICS:

1:Violence and Injury Prevention

2:Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drug Prevention

3: HIV, STI and Pregnancy Prevention

4: Nutrition and Physical Activity

5:Emotional and Mental Health

6. Abstinence, Puberty and Personal Health

HYDROPONICS

The word hydroponic is a combination of the Latin words “hydro” which means water and “ponos” which means work. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without soil. In a hydroponic system, nutrients and supplements are dissolved into water, creating a nutrient solution. The nutrient solution is delivered to plant roots and then captured and recirculated through the system.

A variety of vegetables can be grown hydroponically in these systems including lettuce, chard, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries and many more. Overall, the systems provide a natural laboratory for students to learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), nutrition, conservation and entrepreneurship in a hands-on, experiential manner.

National Health Education Standards

The National Health Education Standards (NHES) detail what students need to know and be able to do in order to achieve health literacy, by setting performance indicators around the functional knowledge and essential skills required for adopting and maintaining healthy behaviors. All lessons in the K-12 curriculum are aligned with NHES, and great emphasis is placed on students having opportunities to become proficient in and master the concepts and skills outlined at each grade level.

The curriculum allows hands-on learning in the areas of plant nutrition, plant science, plant physiology, nutrient and pH testing, and agriculture. Lesson plans include: building a hydroponic garden, hydroponic methods and media, nutrient requirements and testing, leaf and flower structure, seed germination and planting, photosynthesis and light, biological pest control, harvesting and marketing fresh produce.
