The recent government shutdown and subsequent uncertainty surrounding food assistance benefits have led to a surge in demand at a critical local food resource.
Tara Wedel, Reedsburg School Social Worker, reports receiving an increased amount of requests from individual families and Sauk County Human Services for grocery boxes provided by The Den Distribution. This rise in need follows weeks of worry about the continued ability for families to access SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits during the period of government instability.
SNAP, formerly known as 'food stamps,' is a federal lifeline that provides funds for healthy food for adults and families who may not be able to afford groceries themselves. People can apply for FoodShare services online through ACCESS Wisconsin or on paper through the county office.
"I want their basic needs to be met and I want to provide for these kids," said Wedel.
Wedel, along with Callie Fore and Jeffery Bindl, helps fund and organize The Den Food Market with support from local community members. Wedel noted that while demand has gone up during what has been a challenging time due to the government shutdown and high food costs, supply has so far kept pace. Critically, she mentioned that families who have not typically needed The Den's services have recently been seeking its assistance.
According to the School District of Reedsburg website, The Den is a FREE food market available to all students, staff, and community members. There are no income requirements or applications needed to access the service. The Den drive-thru for community members is open most Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (or until all boxes have been distributed).
Beyond weekly distribution, Wedel proactively contacts families before school breaks—including Thanksgiving, winter, spring break, and long weekends—to ask if they need food or hygiene product donations. This ensures students and families are cared for during the duration of the break. Reedsburg Helping Hands and the American Auxiliary Legion also help coordinate ongoing donations and holiday support.
"I just want to do what’s best for kids,” Wedel stated.
