That familiar, three-note tune you hear just before the morning announcements? It’s not a recording.
That sound is played live by Ms. Wendy Colvin, one of the school's administrative assistants, who hits three different chime bars to start the day.
According to Colvin, “It is similar to the principal’s bell in Grease,” a famous 1978 movie starring John Travolta.
This unique tradition has a long history, which began 15 years ago at Loganville Elementary. Mr. Ethan Ott, the music teacher there, first glued
the C#, A#, and F# chimes onto a whiteboard for Ms. Colvin to use. At Loganville, she would even allow students to make up their own tunes each morning.
When Loganville closed down, Ms. Colvin moved to our high school and brought the chimes with her. For the past four years, she has continued the tradition, ringing those same chimes to start the announcements at RAHS.
For many students, the source of the sound is a daily mystery.
“Students always think I press a button to play it,” Colvin said. “They are always surprised when they find out I play it.”
