While most of the Reedsburg student body is enjoying the start of the school year, the RAHS Marching Band has been busy practicing in both extreme heat and early cold in order to be prepared to entertain the community at various events.
The student-musicians are working toward an amazing performance—a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson—that will be showcased for hundreds of fans at football games and upcoming parades.
Band Director Scott Bruer said the most challenging part of the entire season is getting the intricate movements right.
"I think the most challenging part of marching band drill is to get all the band members to be perfectly in sync as they move set to set while playing their instruments," Bruer said. “We practice drill by learning it sequentially, mastering a set through repetition and then adding the next set to it until the entire show is learned.”
The sequential learning process demands focus and teamwork, but the band members are up to the task.
“The band is made up of awesome, talented kids who will work extremely hard to create the best show possible,” Bruer added.
For the students, seeing the show come together and the fact that it provides year round entertainment and opportunities is its own reward.
"One thing I’m really excited for is jazz starting up again this year," said Antonio Gonzalez, a freshman marcher. "Drill isn’t as bad as first expected, but once everything gets memorized it gets really enjoyable/satisfying to play and march everything.”
The band has performed at four different football games, multiple parades and the Corn Feast this fall. Soon, with basketball season coming, the band will take its talents indoors for all the varsity basketball games where it will play fun, fan favorite songs in PEP Band style. It will also play at the Veteran’s Day assembly on Nov. 11.
From the hot summer months to the cold winter months, the Reedsburg Band is always hard at work.
